Restaurant Review

If you are looking for a taste of Germany in San Diego, Kaiserhof Restaurant should be your destination. At this Ocean Beach restaurant, everything from the atmosphere to the beers on tap boasts German authenticity. The cuisine is hearty and comforting, from homemade Bratwurst to Beef Stroganoff, complete with side orders of sauerkraut and spatzle. The rotating selection of 14 beers on tap offer a range of weiss beers and pilsners, and may be one of the best selections of German beers in the city. And of course, as you are savoring your meal, don’t forget to leave room for the Apple Strudel!

Very Pleasant Experience rating

Name: Carolyn | Date: June.03.2009 My son-in-law's mother is visiting from Nebraska and is of German origin, so I decided to try the Kaiserhof for her birthday. It was a VERY pleasant experience, due in large part to our server Zuzanna. She was so helpful in making our choices, and she made sure to include my 5-year-old grandson. The food was very tasty--especially the black bean soup and goulash. They brought a beautiful piece of "Princess cake" which we all had to try. It was layers of fine cake and marzipan and raspberry gel; the best cake he ever had, according to my son-in-law. His mom could not stop thanking and hugging me for a wonderful time with wonderful food. It felt like a family meal. I would especially like to thank the receptionist (I'm sorry I did not get her name)and Zuzanna for a wonderful evening.

So rude! rating

Name: Krista | Date: March.08.2009 My husband and I went here for the first time yesterday and I was apalled by the rude woman that served us. I am not sure of here name but she was an older German woman. Throughout our meal, any questions were directed to my husband and I was ignored. When our beers were almost done, she came over and enquired "all done"? My husband said not quite and she poured the rest of my beer into his glass and took mine away???? I was gobsmacked! Apart from the fact I was not finished, how does she know he wants to drink my dregs anyway???? Unbelievably rude. The food was good but the attitude leaves a lot to be desired!

Really ugly treatment. rating

Name: robert | Date: March.09.2008 I don't claim to be an expert on this type of food or beer. As far as I was concerned it was alright. I agree with some other comments about the service. Especially the ulgy ill mannered guy who was running the place the night I was there. This was just over a year ago. I assumed he owned it although I couldn't imagine someone who owned a place being that stupid, petty, and abusive. I was forced to let it go since the people I was with live there and may go back; I wouldn't because if I did I am not sure I could practice that much restraint again.

Pretty fun/tasty food rating

Name: Michelle | Date: May.29.2007 My husband and I went there for the first time today and we have lived here for 14 years. Great beer, nice bier garten. The free HH food was scarce, which was fine with us as we wanted to try things off the menu. My husband really wanted some free wings though, but a rather large woman went up and took all of them back to her table and left none for the rest of the patrons. Oh well, I guess it was free (according to someone else's post, this is unacceptable behavior to the owner who probably would have scolded her!). We had several different beers and the wurst sampler and a pretzel. Everything was delicious.

Good stuff rating

Name: Clifford | Date: December.08.2006 We enjoyed Kaiserhof quite a bit. The food was authentic (recommend the Zigeunerwurst and the chicken tarragon). We would have liked more vegetable options, but such is German food. Excellent potatoes in all forms.

Unacceptably rude staff... rating

Name: Bill | Date: November.09.2006 I arrived a few minutes before seating time of 5:00pm with my elderly father who happens to like German food. The place was literally empty except for staff and a lone patron at the bar. Silly me. I thought by arriving so early, we'd beat the crowd. The hostess, attired in her German outfit, couldn't have been more rude to us. She was more preoccupied with shuffling a pile of menus on the podium she was standing behind. She coldly advised me and my father there was "no way" she could fit us in any earlier than 9:00pm. Maybe a stampede of customers with reservations was about to occur any minute, but she couldn't have handled it anymore poorly. I guess business at this place is so good they can be rude like that and get away with it. I was so put off I didn't even bother to find the manager. Save your money. Go elsewhere. My two cents...

Petty German Attitude rating

Name: Peyton | Date: August.25.2006 I frequent the bar area several times a month for happy hour and often feel uncomfortable while the owner is present. The owner, Paula, watchs everyone like a hawk to make sure no patron is over-eating their happy hour food, which is brought out in small amounts at 5pm and then replinished an hour later at 6pm. She then pushs you to order more beer to meet her profit margin. The highlight of this behavior occurred the other day when I walked in with friends on a hot day and ordered a glass of water. Before we could even place a beer order, she stated "No happy hour food, when you only order water". Mind you I have been coming to this restaurant for the last 5 years on a regular basis and was appauled by her petty attitude. She has lost myself and all my friends as customers. Pathetic. Here's a tip: She doesn't come in on Tuesdays.

Positive experience rating

Name: Steve | Date: March.20.2006 We tried the Kaiserhof for the first time recently and, after having previously read the reviews, were very pleasantly surprised at the service, the food quality and the price/value relationship. The German red wine was satisfactory as was the draft beer we tried. All members of our party agreed that we would return.

Ok food but service lacks rating

Name: Ulf | Date: January.22.2006 I didned at Kaiserhof some times and the food itself is ok (I'm german). The food itself is pretty expensive and the portions are not really bavarian (means huge). It's an ok place to get german food if you crave for some Schnitzel or Knoedel. Guten Hunger.

Felt very unwelcome rating

Name: helen | Date: July.27.2005 We fell upon this little place on a drive about, asked before entering if we could be seated with two young children - no problem, they said. The food was fantastic, fresh and tasty, we all enjoyed every mouthfull. However, the waitress was sour looking, we asked her about the restaurant and the German theme of it - she grumbled a story of the owners coming from Germany and that she didn't like wearing her costume. The waiter serving a group on the next table to us was staring very rudely every time one of our children made a noise (they were not mis behaving, just being 6 & 2) and made us feel very uncomfortable. The food was great but the service was nothing to be proud of and they did not make us feel welcome at all. If they don't want children in there, just have a 'NO CHILDREN' sign outside right next to the 'PROPER ATTIRE TO BE WORN' sign.

Fantastic rating

Name: Beverly | Date: January.02.2005 We had Christmas Eve dinner at Kaiserhof this year and were more than completely satisfied. I had the lambchops (very large 4 chops) and done perfectly. As usual the restaurant was spotless, our reservation was on time, the waitress was extremely busy, but her attitude was upbeat and very helpful. I think this will become a new tradition for us for Christmas Eve, and we will be eating at the restaurant much more often.

Disappointing rating

Name: Chris | Date: December.26.2004 Since moving to Ocean Beach from Mission Valley, the Kaiserhof seems to have lost interest in patrons. I ate with a group of about 10 people on December 26th. The food was mostly good (the lobster bisque soup received bad reviews and the roulade was only fair) and the beer list is above average. We were at least one-half of the restaurant's lunch business that day. However, the level of attention was poor. The management didn't appear to welcome our business, although the restaurant was largely empty on a typically slow day. The kitchen closed early in the afternoon, and despite previously paying a $250 tab plus a 17% tip, we were told no appetizers would be available until the kitchen opened again at 4:30 PM. Our group has been eating at the Kaiserhof almost every Christmas season for more than 15 years. Next year we will seek another location.

Great place! rating

Name: Jamah | Date: May.07.2004 I love the atmosphere, and the food was great! We had awesome service, I can't complain about anything, I highly recommend Kaiserhof for a fun German experience. Check out the happy hour in their Bier Garden... it's GREAT!

excellent food and atmosphere rating

Name: christine | Date: November.12.2003 We loved the place! The food was fabulous, and I truly felt that I was in Germany.

Salmon rating

Name: Angela | Date: December.19.2002 I had the Salmon. I was so delicious. the sauce on top was amazing. The gave really big portions.
